Closed to Youth: Political Opportunity & Youth Activism Against Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” Bill

Examines youth political activism against Florida’s 2022 Parental Rights in Education Act (HB 1557) through Political Opportunity Structure and Resource Mobilization theories, asking why highly visible student mobilization failed to influence legislative outcomes. The paper focuses on how institutional access, political opposition, and the position of young people shape the opportunities available to youth activists.

Closed to Youth: Political Opportunity & Youth Activism in France’s “Mouvement Lycéen”

Examines youth political activism in France’s “Mouvement Lycéen” through Political Opportunity Structure and Resource Mobilization theories, asking why highly visible student mobilization can sustain protest yet translate only unevenly into formal policy influence. The paper focuses on how institutional access, organizational resources, and the political position of minors shape the opportunities available to youth activists.

Globalization, Sovereignty & Government Structures

Fall 2025

Between the Global and the Local: A Burgundy Perspective on Glocalization and State Rescaling

Uses Burgundy’s wine governance as a case study of glocalization and multi-level governance, examining the shift from France’s AOC system to the EU’s AOP framework as an upward redistribution of regulatory authority and a broader example of state rescaling.

Summer 2026

A Bridge, Not a Settlement: Why the Ruhr Authority Failed

Analyzes the International Authority for the Ruhr as a useful but temporary mechanism for postwar control and German economic reintegration. It argues that the Authority ultimately failed because unequal external supervision lacked the political legitimacy and mutual obligations needed for durable European governance, helping explain its replacement by the more cooperative European Coal and Steel Community.

Fall 2026

The Walls of a Border: The Social Constructs of Borders in the European Union

Argues that borders and jurisdictions are legal and social constructs whose practical force depends on collective recognition and political choice. Using the European Union’s simultaneous softening of many internal borders and hardening of its external edge, the paper shows that border permeability is politically produced rather than an inevitable feature of geography or sovereignty.

Borders Without Monopolies: Glocalization and Border Transformation in Europe

Investigates how multi-level governance restructures the function of borders within European integration, hypothesizing that borders persist legally while losing their monopolistic role in defining culture, markets, and sovereignty.

Rescaling Governance in Conflict: How Individuals Perceive Authority Beyond the Nation-State — A Case Study of Lebanon & Ukraine

Examines how people in conflict-affected environments perceive authority beyond formal state institutions, using Lebanon and Ukraine to explore how authority is distributed across local actors, international organizations, NGOs, and foreign states.
